Michelle Garland; Ames, Iowa 2008

Action Location: Ames, Iowa

Action Leaders: Michelle Garland & Family

Action Date: Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Statement: One of my first ally experiences with the gay and transgender community was back in 1991 when I attended a lecture by Karen Harbeck, author of “Coming out of the Classroom Closet,”  in order to receive extra credit points for a class.  I didn’t want anyone to think I was a lesbian, so I made certain to take a male companion to the lecture with me.

During that lecture my eyes were opened to the inequalities and discrimination experienced on a daily basis for those who are lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT).   My conscience hit me like a ton of bricks as I realized this particular minority group needed some outspoken allies!  And so my journey as an LGBT ally for respect and human rights equality began.

I believe support from individuals such as myself has really helped the LGBT community in Iowa as they have gained the right to be included in discrimination statements. Our Governor signed a bill nearly three years ago protecting LGBT youth from being bullied in Iowa public schools.

As a teacher, a mother of three, and a woman of strong faith convictions, I stand up straight and proud as a supporter of civil rights and liberties for ALL Americans and I am thankful to live in a state that is leading the way!
