Action Location: Denver Colorado
Action Leaders: Lauren Johnston
Action Date: Sunday, September 14th, 2008
Statement:
It is my duty, as a heterosexual woman, to disrupt the heterosexual privilege that mainstream society takes part in. By not speaking up, and not gathering allies together in unity, I am just another person allowing the injustice of discrimination to continue in our country.
The Denver Seven Straight Nights will have two components: celebration, and a call for action. It is time to celebrate the steps that the state has taken to rectify the injustices that are so prevalent in our society. At the same time, the event also calls allies to stand in unity with the LGBTIQ community and ask for changes in legislation in regards to same sex unions, bullying, and hate crimes.
Denver, and other cities in the state of Colorado, is on the verge of change. It is time for a Civil Rights Movement and time for Colorado allies to band together and ask for the right type of change, a change for the betterment of society. Through this call to action, changes will hopefully be made in our legislation and offer the next generation an opportunity to live the life of equality.
