Statement: Our society has overcome many injustices, from racial to gender discrimination to social and class inequity. It is time now to overcome homophobia. "Sanctified ignorance," a ninety-six year old friend likes to say, "is still ignorance." The problems of lesbian, gay, transgender, and bisexual individuals in Tennessee are not caused by LGBT people but by straight people, very often influenced by false teachings of the churches.
We must gather as straight Tennesseans together with our LGBT allies to reaffirm our commitment to exercising leadership and love in keeping the state of Tennessee free from bullying and crimes against LGBT citizens. We are all children of God. By participating in this one event of Seven Straight Nights, we can publicly recommit ourselves to nurturing the full inclusion of LGBT people in all our communities.
