Action Location: Los Angeles, California
Action Leaders: Jeanie Mortensen and Stuart Bechman
Action Date: Friday, September 19th
Statement: As a married woman of faith who absolutely adores her atheist sweetheart, I want everyone to have the ability to marry the person that they love and to have the relationship fully recognized and respected. When I fell in love with Stuart, my family and my church opposed the union. It was difficult to not have their approval, but legally, we could get married. Until very recently, gay and transgender couples have not had this opportunity and now in California, that right is threatened.
In the last few months, thousands of couples have finally been able to marry. Some have been together for decades and many have children. If Proposition 8 passes, these families will lose this recognition overnight. No one has the right to figuratively take my marriage certificate, rip it in pieces and tell me that my relationship is no longer valid. I am involved in Seven Straight Nights for Equal Rights and in the efforts to defeat California’s Proposition 8 because I will not stand by and allow the same thing to happen to other families just because they are gay. Equality in marriage must be preserved.
