Families are the heart of human society; and the right to marry and choose one's family has long been recognized as a fundamental human right.  As an organization and community that upholds the values of reason and evidence, Atheists United believes human rights to be a vital and foundational cornerstone of civilization and humanity.  But if morals and rights are to mean anything, they must be recognized for all human beings, not just the privileged few.  Proposition 8 is an attempt to roll back those recognized human rights and restrict them to a privileged minority.  We stand against the religious intolerance represented by Proposition 8 and proudly defend all human rights to be granted to all of humanity.

As an “Open and Affirming” congregation within the United Church of Christ, we celebrate the decision by the California Supreme Court that declared all people have a fundamental right to marry the person of their choice.  We are committed to Jesus’ ministry of compassion and inclusiveness.  As a core value, we affirm basic human rights and encourage involvement on behalf of those whose rights are threatened.
